Tamil Padam 2 Movie Review

Spoof movies usually don't work for me. In English, I have watched few of the "Scary Movie" series, which were decent, few minutes of "Meet the Spartans" which I couldn't bear, and a few other. In Tamil, I've only heard of 2 such "spoof movies": Tamil Padam 1, and this one.

Hence going into this movie, I was a bit skeptical, as to whether it will be a bit too much, or too many jokes would get irritating after a while.

So how was Tamil Padam 2? Well, it was one of the best and the funniest movie I've seen in a long time!!

Man, this movie was such a laugh riot. From Baahubali to Mersal to Vedhalam to Game of Thrones and many more (seriously, many more), no one is spared in this parody movie. The jokes were funny, decent (in the sense, not being too vulgar), and they kept coming, which leaves you entertained for almost 95% of the movie. If I, a guy who watches only a few Tamil movies, got 70% of the jokes, then you (hopefully a person who has at least watched most of the bigger and well known Tamil movies, known a few of the events and statements either made by actors or politicians in TN in the current decade), would get most of the jokes, and have a good time!

One of the best things I loved about this film was the subtle jokes left or shown in the background. It was so much fun to spot them while you're watching the movie. You need to be completely alert in almost every scene, or you'll miss it. I don't think I've seen this in a movie for quite some time. Come to think of it, probably never!!

None of the jokes were taken in a way, or with the intention to hurt / offend the person or the movie or TV show they're imitating. Which seems to be really tough these days? Few 4th wall breaking jokes, and 'making-fun-of-Tamil-cinema's-clichés' jokes were made, which were good.

Like I said before, the director C S Amuthan has covered so many parodies in one movie. These are the type of movies where you may need to watch it twice to see if you missed out anything. You get one even before the opening credits. You would start wondering, "Are they going to run out of jokes towards the end"?....... But nope, they didn't. Satish, who you mostly see as a side character, "the comedian" in films, really shined here, as he got to play a full-fledged role. Siva? Well, no words to describe. All I can say is "Hats off to you, Sir!"

The songs: Not that great to listen to as such. However, even during the songs, you get jokes, sometimes in the background. For a guy like me who doesn't like it when certain songs become a sudden pause to the story and detract you from the movie, it was acceptable. The opening song though, "Yaarumilla Yevanumilla" is the most hilarious and weirdly addictive song, which again, has to be heard along with the video! They've covered so much in that one song, which I missed quite a lot, the first time I viewed it.

One problem I had was towards the latter part of the 2nd half, which made the movie seem bit longer than it should have been. The flashback scenes dragged a bit, but the movie ended well.

So go for this movie with your friends or family, and enjoy. Group viewing is recommended, as your friend / family member may miss some jokes, you may miss some.....etc.
I would give it a 8/10.

Aayirathil Oruvan (2010) Movie Review

There are films that you really like, but forget over the course of time due to the multitude of movies you watch after that. But there are some great movies, that stay with you, that have such a deep impact on your heart & soul that it never leaves you. Aaiyrathil Oruvan (2010) is one of such movies for me.  Deeply rooted in an era that marked the origin of Tamil civilization, tackling genres like history, adventure, drama & action, Aayirathil Oruvan was a monumental project by writer-director Selvaraghavan & his team, done on a budget of Rs. 32 crores ($7m, yes you read that right), with 2000 junior artists involved in makeup, costume design & VFX, lot of effort spent on building & erecting the sets, music composer pouring his heart & soul into his songs. But guess what, audiences back in 2010 didn't like it. People complained it was too violent, too disturbing or gory, not understandable, difficult to follow & so on. But now, 10 years later, people p...

The Defenders Season 1 Review

Uh-oh! I expected this to be much better! I am going to split my review into two: The No-Spoiler section & the spoiler section, considering the fact that it hasn't been many days since it has released on Netflix. So everyone can read :) THE NO -SPOILER Part: The Defenders is like your street-level Avengers, where all the main Marvel Netflix characters - Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist team up. I was so excited for this series ever since they announced this Marvel-Netflix show, and even more after seeing each of the characters' individual shows (excluding Iron Fist, coz if one had read my Review on Iron Fist , they'd know how much I hated it) . The very fact that these completely different, complex and interesting "superheroes" would team up to fight some crazy, evil villain, was a long wait I couldn't bear. This show has some good moments, but it also left me very disappointed in some aspects. I liked how in the beginning they to...
