Arrow Season 5 Review

Here is my first review. A review of a TV show that I absolutely love right now, thanks to this season.
(And being it the first, this may be a bit lengthy and I may go a bit off the track. So please bear with me.) :)
(Also, SPOILERS, obviously.)

Wow. What a fantastic season. Who would have thought Arrow could recover after that horrible mess of a Season 4. I had absolutely zero hopes going into this season; and my oh my was I absolutely blown away!

This Season seemed to have been crafted quite nicely. What really fascinated me this season was how good and interesting each episode was. Less of Olicity (reasons which I will mention in another post later on), more focus on the Green Arrow aspect, better choreographed fight scenes, interesting storylines (some of the side character arcs to be mentioned - Thea, Quentin, Rene), and a villain who as a character and the actor who performed it will always remain in my mind as one of the best superhero villains ever.

Lets go from start to finish. The initial episodes with Tobias Church as the villain and Oliver letting new recruits join his team was good. It seemed they were going on a slightly different direction, and they were good, decent episodes. Good fillers until the big bad "Prometheus" was said to wreak havoc in Oliver's life.

Then came the 4-way crossover. Man, what a blast that was. It was a really difficult job to pull off such a huge crossover with all those characters, and CW some how did it, with all the budget for cool VFX, making our favourite heroes interact (Ray's cousin joke, Mick and Supergirl). The Arrow episode which was a part of this crossover, was disliked by quite a few, as it did not deliver on any of the action. Well, that was because it was the 100th episode of Arrow (Yayy!). It was an entirely Arrow-centric episode, albeit a fantastic one at that. It played with our emotions (and our characters'), showing how far Arrow has come. It even brought together Ray & Sara from Season 3, Deathstroke (thankfully the suit only cameo here made up for it later :), Malcolm & Damien Darhk, which led to a fantastic showdown.

Crossover done. Now back to Arrow's main focus of the season, which was him learning to allow new persons into his life, and that working alone doesn't help always. Among the new team members, they were Ok. Good that they maintained Rene. They were able to give him a decent story arc, with his daughter and Quentin etc. Rest were, eh!
Evelyn, oh what a mean bitch! I almost forgot why she betrayed Oliver and joined Prometheus (probably my memory?). Then there's Curtis, God how bloody irritating they made his character!!! Geez some bad joke every damn time! Every damn scene! He is almost the new bitchy Felicity (now thankfully she is better). Ragman was cool but too overpowered. Sadly they had to write him out. And finally Dinah Drake. The new Black Canary! Well she was decent, but I do feel they did not give her character much to do with, not much to make me believe she is the real replacement for Laurel.

So all this while Prometheus was there wreaking some shit in the background, and we were all wondering as to who it was. And then came Episode 15 and was like 'Surprise! Adrian Chase is not the Vigilante (who is he by the way?), he is the real Prometheus!' Wow. I haven't read the comics, but I do read the comments and a few theories on various social media forums. Hence I too was convinced that he is just the Vigilante. And the writers did a very fantastic job fleshing out his character all throughout the latter half of the season, which provided for some of the BEST SCENES in Arrow ever! Wow. This was where Arrow was slowly going back to its awesomeness as in Season 1 (2nd Half) and Season 2, and boy it did not disappoint!!!
This part of Season 5 was thrilling, exciting and had really good storytelling. The whole Oliver realising he likes to kill, any scene between Oliver and Adrian, and the overall tone was brilliant. This was where Arrow really won me over this year, compared to The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow.
The writers did a fantastic job making Prometheus a really bad, crazy and eerie villain. In fact, he is the best villain in all of Arrow, pushing Deathstroke to 2nd; and who would have thought all this would happen after Season 4. (Lol). Josh Seagarra's acting as Prometheus was fantastic. He portrayed his dual role of Prometheus and the DA in a brilliant fashion. I will never forget this line "I told you Oliver. Everything, everyone around you suffers!" Man, awesome!

The latter half then slowly set up to how almost impossible it was to defeat Adrian. And then also came the set up for what was one of the best Season Finales ever in all history! Oliver had to make some tough alliances, and boy how nice it was to see awesome characters such as Malcolm, Nyss and frigging Slade back!!! WOWOWOWOOWOW. In episode 22, their appearances alone was too good to rate that episode high. Had CW not spoilt it, it would have been out of this world.
Finally, here we are on Lian Yu, the place where it all started for Oliver. The Season 5 finale.
Two words, Amazing, and Amazing! The way how alliances w.r.t Slade kept changing, the whole Malcolm sacrificing for Thea (I do hope he is back. Would miss his character), the fight scenes (which by the way was much awesome in this finale, and much much better than the terrible ones in Season 4) between Oliver and Prometheus, Dinah and Black Siren, Slade slicing through the League like cutting fruits, and Talia vs Nyssa Al Ghul. I was so waiting for these, and it was just too good. It ended fittingly, with Prometheus going ahead to even prove to Oliver's son who he really is, and it ended on such a huge cliffhanger that I just can't wait for Season 6!

Another awesome thing about this finale was how the flashbacks finally ended. I was so waiting for this scene where they replay the very first scene in Season 1 Episode 1 of him shooting an arrow and being rescued by the boat. They tied this well with him having to kill Kovar and all.
The biggest surprise and one of the best moments was the phone call Oliver made to Moira. What an heartwarming scene. I almost cried. It was nice seeing Moira back. Thank goodness at least this cameo was not spoiled.

Some of the other aspects of Season 5:

The whole Oliver Queen as the "Mayor by day, Green Arrow by night" was a nice aspect. I actually was a little intrigued in some of the political aspects which Oliver had to handle throughout this season.

The dialogues, interactions between Thea & Quentin, him recovering from the loss of Laurel, Thea getting into trouble, Quentin & Rene, were all nice. Felicity and Helix stuff was interesting. I liked the Dark Felicity thing. I so do hope now that she is back with Oliver, their relationship feels natural and it doesn't become the main focus of the show like Season 4.

The flashbacks - were quite good! Initially, it was all "Eh. Anyway he is gonna survive". However, the interesting dynamics of characters like the Bratva in general, Anatoly and Kovar made it fun to watch. They managed to tie in the Oliver moving to Lian Yu from Russia well, and it was a nice goodbye to the flashbacks of 5 years in hell in the season finale.

Well, that is it friends. I think this review went a little too long Haha. But I do hope that whoever has read it so far has enjoyed it. Will write more reviews as and when the time comes. Bye!!

Tamil Padam 2 Movie Review

Spoof movies usually don't work for me. In English, I have watched few of the "Scary Movie" series, which were decent, few minutes of "Meet the Spartans" which I couldn't bear, and a few other. In Tamil, I've only heard of 2 such "spoof movies": Tamil Padam 1, and this one. Hence going into this movie, I was a bit skeptical, as to whether it will be a bit too much, or too many jokes would get irritating after a while. So how was Tamil Padam 2? Well, it was one of the best and the funniest movie I've seen in a long time!! (Source:  Thamizh Padam 2 - IMDb ) Man, this movie was such a laugh riot. From Baahubali to Mersal to Vedhalam to Game of Thrones and many more (seriously, many more) , no one is spared in this parody movie. The jokes were funny, decent (in the sense, not being too vulgar), and they kept coming, which leaves you entertained for almost 95% of the movie. If I, a guy who watches only a few Tamil movies, got 70% of th...

Aayirathil Oruvan (2010) Movie Review

There are films that you really like, but forget over the course of time due to the multitude of movies you watch after that. But there are some great movies, that stay with you, that have such a deep impact on your heart & soul that it never leaves you. Aaiyrathil Oruvan (2010) is one of such movies for me.  Deeply rooted in an era that marked the origin of Tamil civilization, tackling genres like history, adventure, drama & action, Aayirathil Oruvan was a monumental project by writer-director Selvaraghavan & his team, done on a budget of Rs. 32 crores ($7m, yes you read that right), with 2000 junior artists involved in makeup, costume design & VFX, lot of effort spent on building & erecting the sets, music composer pouring his heart & soul into his songs. But guess what, audiences back in 2010 didn't like it. People complained it was too violent, too disturbing or gory, not understandable, difficult to follow & so on. But now, 10 years later, people p...

The Defenders Season 1 Review

Uh-oh! I expected this to be much better! I am going to split my review into two: The No-Spoiler section & the spoiler section, considering the fact that it hasn't been many days since it has released on Netflix. So everyone can read :) THE NO -SPOILER Part: The Defenders is like your street-level Avengers, where all the main Marvel Netflix characters - Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist team up. I was so excited for this series ever since they announced this Marvel-Netflix show, and even more after seeing each of the characters' individual shows (excluding Iron Fist, coz if one had read my Review on Iron Fist , they'd know how much I hated it) . The very fact that these completely different, complex and interesting "superheroes" would team up to fight some crazy, evil villain, was a long wait I couldn't bear. This show has some good moments, but it also left me very disappointed in some aspects. I liked how in the beginning they to...
