With so many good Tamil movies running in theatres these days, I had to watch at least a few of them. I randomly picked to see "Ratsasan" last week, and thank God, I chose to watch this movie!
When you go into a movie, having zero expectations, you would enjoy the movie that much more. And that made this movie a pleasant surprise for me.
A thriller is supposed to keep you hooked, make you wonder "What's next?" or "Who could the killer be?", throw clues at you: the minute details here and there .... and let you figure out the mystery along with our protagonist. Ratsasan delivers on all these and makes it an enjoyable movie watching experience. The movie, although 2 hours 50 minutes long, does not feel so. That in itself is a great thing.
Starting with the story, well done for a thriller. The movie starts off on a good note, setting up the tone and environment the movie is going to show, gives you a good glimpse of what this killer is capable of, introduces our protagonist, makes you believe why he is determined on catching this killer, and the various locations and characters the movie would be dealing with. Although the story isn't something extraordinary or a masterpiece, the way it was written and shown on screen was enough for an engaging thrill-ride. It does not seem to be copied or inspired by other movies. Story of this movie makes it stand on its own.
The screenplay was one of the biggest plus points of this movie. It kept me at the edge of my seat, made me wonder what is going to happen next. Some scenes, especially in the 1st half, were gripping. One unique thing I noticed, which director Ram Kumar used to tell the story, was sudden rapid cuts. This was a little off-putting at first but later became an effective way to move the story forward.
Performances in this movie were also good. Vishnu Vishal played the "aspiring filmmaker but now a newbie cop" perfectly. You can see that he has put his heart and soul into it. You don't see him as a "cop who fights bad guys", but you see him as an actual cop, who uses his skills to track down this serial killer. Meaning, it was a very believable performance. I feel he is a very underrated actor, and I wish to see him in further roles like this. Amala Paul, as the school teacher, and his love interest, was fine. No unnecessary romance sub-plots, and even for that one song, it was in the background of Vishnu Vishal's investigation. Supporting roles played by Radha Ravi, Nizhalgal Ravi, Ramdoss etc. were also good.
Ghibran's music for this film was the best thing to happen to this movie. The score created the perfect tone, every sound, every noise sounding creepy and eerie, building that tension, the intensity to keep you glued to the screen. Watching this movie with Ghibran's music is a unique experience, which makes Ratsasan different from other thrillers. I simply loved the BGM for this movie. Watch the trailer and you will know for yourself.
Like I said earlier, do not go into this movie expecting some out-of-this-world thriller having really intricate clues, complex puzzle solving or any non-linear storytelling. Movies which have that and execute it perfectly are masterpieces. This movie is a simple, engaging thrill-ride, with good performances, great background score, and a formidable villain, with a few twists and turns.
My rating for this movie: 8.5/10.
I know I am late in reviewing this movie, but I would personally suggest everyone reading this to go watch it now in theaters. With so many good movies running in theaters now, it wouldn't be a waste of an expenditure on movie tickets, especially for this one.
